An auto-prime pump is a surface-mounted centrifugal pump fitted with a dedicated priming chamber and vacuum mechanism that evacuates air from the suction pipe automatically before each start — no manual priming or foot valve is needed. Once the air is cleared, the pump draws liquid from the source and operates continuously; if the supply runs dry, the auto-prime system re-establishes suction when liquid returns without operator intervention.

- The pump cannot be immersed in the water source (surface installation only)

Auto-prime pumps differ from self-priming pumps in one key way: self-priming pumps re-prime using residual liquid trapped in the casing; auto-prime pumps use a vacuum system, giving them reliable performance on the first start even when the pump casing is completely dry.
