Auto-prime pumps and self-priming pumps both operate above the waterline — but they work differently and suit different site conditions.

Auto-prime pumps (Cosmos CAP range) use a dedicated priming chamber that automatically evacuates air before each start. This means the pump can run dry without damage — critical on intermittent dewatering jobs where sumps empty unpredictably. The CAP delivers flows up to 74,483 LPM at heads up to 169 metres, powered by diesel engines (KOEL, Eicher, Baudouin, or CAT). That makes it the right choice for remote sites without electricity, large flood-control deployments, and mining applications where the pump will move sites repeatedly.

Self-priming pumps (Cosmos CSP range) prime manually on first use and require electricity. They deliver up to 4,500 LPM at 28 metres head — well-suited for smaller construction sites, basement dewatering, and foundation drainage where power is available and the installation is fixed.

Quick rule of thumb:

• Choose auto-prime when power is unavailable, portability matters, or the pump will run intermittently
• Choose self-priming when electricity is available, flow requirements are moderate, and the installation is fixed

Suction lift is the same for both: up to 9.8 metres from water surface to pump inlet.

Correct HP selection depends on four variables: required flow rate (LPM), total head (metres from water surface to discharge point), water type, and available power source.

For the Cosmos CDW submersible range:

• 1.5–3 HP: 450–1,200 LPM at heads up to 30 metres — suitable for small construction sumps, shallow basement pits
• 5–10 HP: 1,500–3,000 LPM at 40–60 metres — medium tunnel and basement dewatering, drainage trenches
• 15–50 HP: 4,000–8,500 LPM or heads above 70 metres — large infrastructure sites, mines, highway cuttings

For slurry applications (CSL range, SG up to 2.1): Upsize by 30–50% versus clean water calculations to account for the specific gravity of the fluid.

For sewage (CSW range): Solid size (20–100 mm) determines pump selection as much as HP. A 50 HP CSW handles 33,000 LPM at 60 metres head.

For surface-mounted auto-prime (CAP range): Available in 2 HP to 1,550+ HP — primarily selected by flow rate and required suction lift from the sump.

The Cosmos CDW submersible dewatering pump is built around five engineering choices that matter on Indian construction and infrastructure sites:

1. Nitride-hardened SS-410 impellers (HRC 52–55 hardness)
Most competing pumps use cast iron or standard stainless steel impellers. The CDW’s nitride-hardened SS-410 impellers are significantly harder — extending service life in abrasive muddy water before efficiency drops or replacement is needed.

2. Aluminium alloy stator casing
Where most pumps use cast iron motor bodies, the CDW uses aluminium alloy for better heat dissipation. This matters in high-ambient-temperature Indian site conditions where pump chambers can exceed 40°C.

3. Class H insulation (180°C rating)
The highest insulation class used in industrial pump motors. This protects against thermal overload damage in sustained heavy-duty operation — a common failure mode with cheaper alternatives.

4. Adjustable wear plate gap (±5mm at site)
When pump efficiency drops due to wear, the gap between impeller and wear plate can be adjusted directly on site in minutes. There is no need to return the pump to a workshop for recalibration.

5. Sacrificial zinc anode option
Protects the pump body in saline or coastal seawater applications — relevant for Cosmos’s seaport, harbour, and coastal infrastructure customers.
